Information pratique sur la commune SAINT-FRANçOIS

Saint-François, c’est à l’origine un village formé autour d’un port de pêche qui, au fil du temps s’est transformé en un grand pôle d’accueil touristique.

A l’époque coloniale, sur la commune de Saint-François encore appelée paroisse des châteaux, on cultivait le coton et peu à peu la canne à sucre. Pour palier à son manque de main-d’œuvre au lendemain de l’abolition, une communauté indienne s’est formée venant de Calcutta ou Pondichéry pour travailler sous contrat. Cette composante de la population guadeloupéenne reste d’ailleurs très importante en Grande-Terre. L’usine de Sainte-Marthe ferme et se transforme en hôtel. C’est là que Saint-François choisit une autre orientation ; le tourisme et les loisirs avec son golf, sa marina et ses hôtels…

- Le marché de Saint-François : marché au poisson et pats cuisinés.

- Le golf : un parcours 18 trous dessiné par Trent Jones. Il accueille un grand nombre de compétitions régionales et nationales et séduira certainement les passionnés.

- Balade en avion et en hydravion.

- La marina : avec ses boutiques et ses hôtels, cette ancienne saline est située au cœur de la commune et de la zone touristique. De là, on peut se rendre à la Désirade, à Petite-Terre, à Marie-Galante et aux Saintes.

- La Pointe des Châteaux
C’est l’un des sites les plus remarquables de la Guadeloupe : un coin de Bretagne sous les tropiques. Comme des tours de châteaux, se dressent des rochers sur lesquels se brisent les vagues. Un sentier mène au belvédère du Pavillon sur lequel une croix a été érigée. Une table d’orientation portant des vers de Saint John Perse extraits du recueil d’Amers, permet de se repérer. La vue sur la Désirade et Petite Terre est imprenable.
